Bear’s Book Blog

Fiction

The books I review are in general books I thought enough to pick up and read. If I finish the first 30 pages, I will finish the book. Books I read tend to be horror/romance, horror, science fiction, and on a rare occasion a strictly romance novel; blame it on the fact that I think women are the most fascinating creatures in the universe. A novel without a strong romantic element is hardly worth pursuing in my opinion. A strictly romantic novel has no appeal because most of them are formula written trash not much different from the formula written erotica that bores a thinking person to dumping it in the circular file after five minutes.

You know, the last sentence of the preceding paragraph suddenly explains why I find Isaac Asimov’s writings dry. Blazing worlds, fascinating technologies – all of which I am sure will come to pass because my personal belief is that if man can imagine something we can build it and I have scriptural basis for that opinion – but absolutely no romance. I cannot imagine writing those many words and going to those many worlds and not stumbling over some fine little thing that just makes my heart jump. Perhaps that says more about me than his writings, though.

Authors you will see reviewed on a regular basis are Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Larry Niven, Anne McCaffrey and the Herberts, of Dune fame.
